Escape the City. Discover the Wild.

Just a few hours from the energy of Dar es Salaam, a completely different world awaits. Mikumi National Park offers an exciting introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife, combining open savannahs, beautiful landscapes, abundant wildlife, and spectacular mountain scenery.

Often described as the “Serengeti of the South,” Mikumi is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations from Dar es Salaam. Its open plains make wildlife viewing rewarding, while the surrounding woodlands, wetlands, and mountain landscapes create a diverse safari environment.

With Luguru Adventures, your journey from Dar es Salaam takes you from the city into the heart of Tanzania’s southern wilderness. Watch elephants crossing the plains, giraffes moving gracefully through the woodland, zebras and wildebeest grazing across open grasslands, and lions resting beneath the shade.

From Dar es Salaam to Mikumi

Your adventure begins with an early departure from Dar es Salaam, heading southwest through Tanzania’s changing landscapes.

As the urban environment gradually gives way to countryside, you will pass through rural communities, agricultural areas, and scenic landscapes before reaching the Mikumi region.

The journey itself becomes part of the experience, offering glimpses of everyday Tanzanian life before you enter the wilderness.

Upon arrival at Mikumi National Park, your safari officially begins. After entering the park, your guide will take you along carefully selected game-viewing routes in search of wildlife and memorable landscapes.

Discover the Wildlife of Mikumi

Mikumi’s open environment makes it an excellent destination for game viewing.

During your safari, you may encounter:

  • Elephants

  • Lions

  • Giraffes

  • Zebras

  • Wildebeest

  • Buffaloes

  • Hippos

  • Crocodiles

  • Impalas and other antelopes

  • A wide variety of bird species

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals move freely through their natural environment, but Mikumi offers excellent opportunities to observe Tanzania’s wildlife in an authentic setting.

Explore the Mkata Floodplain

One of the highlights of Mikumi is the Mkata Floodplain, an expansive area of open grassland that provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

The open terrain allows you to scan the landscape for herds of zebra and wildebeest, giraffes browsing among the vegetation, elephants moving across the plains, and predators resting or hunting in their natural surroundings.

The combination of open grasslands and abundant wildlife gives this part of Mikumi its distinctive safari character.

Visit the Hippo Pools

Your safari can also take you towards Mikumi’s Hippo Pools, where you can observe hippos in and around the water.

The pools also attract numerous bird species, making the area particularly enjoyable for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. Depending on the season and conditions, you may also encounter other animals visiting the surrounding water sources.

Wildlife Beneath the Uluguru Mountains

One of the most beautiful features of a Mikumi safari is the dramatic scenery surrounding the park.

The Uluguru Mountains rise in the distance, creating an impressive backdrop to the savannah and woodland landscapes. Game drives around the park can therefore combine two unforgettable elements of Tanzania—wildlife and mountains.

For travelers interested in both Mikumi and the Uluguru Mountains, this also creates an opportunity to combine a safari with a mountain trekking or cultural experience.

A Safari Close to Dar es Salaam

Mikumi is an excellent choice for travelers who want to experience a genuine Tanzanian safari without beginning their journey from the northern safari circuit.

Its relatively convenient road access from Dar es Salaam makes it suitable for short safari escapes as well as longer Southern Tanzania itineraries.

Whether you have one day available or want to spend several nights exploring the region, Luguru Adventures can design your experience around your available time and interests.

Best Time to Visit Mikumi National Park

Mikumi can be visited throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience.

June – October | Dry Season

The dry months generally provide excellent conditions for wildlife viewing. Vegetation is less dense and animals often gather around available water sources, making them easier to spot.

November – May | Green Season

The landscape becomes greener and more vibrant, while the season can offer excellent birdwatching and beautiful photographic scenery. The park can also feel quieter during parts of this period.

Our recommendation: Choose your travel period according to the experience you want—classic wildlife viewing during the dry season or lush scenery and birdlife during the greener months.
