Tour Details

Rising to an impressive 4,566 metres above sea level, Mount Meru is a spectacular active stratovolcano and the dramatic centrepiece of Arusha National Park. Often known as the “little brother” of Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru may be lower in elevation, but its steep terrain, dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and challenging ascent make it a rewarding adventure in its own right.

As Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of Africa’s highest peaks, Mount Meru offers an incredible combination of mountain scenery and wildlife. The lower slopes pass through rich forest habitats where trekkers may encounter buffalo, giraffes, monkeys, and a variety of bird species before entering the higher alpine landscapes.

Unlike the gradual trekking experience found on many Kilimanjaro routes, Mount Meru features steeper sections and more rugged terrain, particularly around the summit. The climb therefore requires good physical preparation, confidence on mountain trails, and a willingness to embrace a more demanding trekking experience.

One of the highlights of the journey is reaching Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru, where trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across Arusha, the surrounding landscapes, and, on clear days, the magnificent silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Mount Meru can be climbed in 3 or 4 days, making it an excellent choice for adventurous travelers looking for a challenging mountain experience or those seeking additional acclimatization before taking on Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary

Day 1Day 1 - Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut

Your Mount Meru adventure begins with a morning transfer from your accommodation to Momella Gate, situated at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level. After completing registration and meeting your mountain team, the trek officially begins.

Because Mount Meru lies within Arusha National Park, the first part of your climb offers a unique combination of mountain trekking and wildlife viewing. As you walk through the beautiful lower slopes, keep your eyes open for giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, elephants, and a variety of bird species that inhabit the park.

The trail gradually winds upward through the lush montane forest, offering peaceful surroundings and beautiful views along the way. After approximately two hours of trekking, you will reach Maio Falls, a scenic spot where you can take a short break, stretch your legs, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Continuing along the trail, you will make your way towards the remarkable Fig Tree Arch, an impressive natural formation created by the roots and branches of a wild fig tree (Ficus thonningii). This is a perfect place to pause and enjoy a freshly prepared picnic lunch surrounded by the forest.

After lunch, the trail continues through increasingly open forest. Along this section, you may have the opportunity to spot different species of monkeys, including the distinctive black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the trees.

After several more hours of steady trekking, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut, your accommodation for the night. Take time to relax, enjoy afternoon tea and snacks, and soak in the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

As the day comes to an end, enjoy the beautiful sunset over the surrounding landscape before settling in for a well-deserved evening and preparing for the next stage of your Mount Meru adventure.

Elevation: Momella Gate (1,500 m) → Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)
Trekking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

Day 2Day 2 - Miriakamba Hut - Saddle Hut

After breakfast, we begin the day’s trek from Miriakamba Hut towards Saddle Hut, following a steep trail that gradually takes us higher into the mountain landscape. Wooden steps along sections of the route make the ascent more manageable, although the climb remains noticeably steep.

As we gain altitude, temperatures begin to drop and the landscape gradually transforms. The lush rainforest gives way to heather and moorland, creating a completely different atmosphere from the lower slopes of Mount Meru.

After approximately two hours of trekking, we reach Mgongo wa Tembo, meaning “Elephant’s Back,” at around 3,200 metres. Here, we take a well-deserved break to rest, enjoy the surrounding scenery, and appreciate the dramatic mountain environment.

We then continue our ascent towards Saddle Hut, located at approximately 3,570 metres. After reaching the hut, we enjoy a warm lunch and have time to relax and recover from the morning’s climb.

Optional Little Meru Trek

The afternoon offers an exciting optional adventure for those who still have the energy to explore further. You can trek to Little Meru, the second-highest summit on Mount Meru, standing at approximately 3,820 metres.

The climb adds around 250 metres of elevation and usually takes approximately 3.5–4.5 hours for the round trip. The effort is well rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across Arusha National Park, the surrounding landscapes, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Little Meru is also an incredible viewpoint for watching the sunset over northern Tanzania.

Alternatively, you can spend the afternoon relaxing at Saddle Hut, enjoying the peaceful mountain surroundings and preparing for the summit adventure ahead.

After returning from Little Meru, dinner will be served at the hut. With an early start and a challenging summit day ahead, an early night’s rest is essential.

Elevation: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) → Saddle Hut (3,570 m) → Little Meru (3,820 m)
Trekking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours to Saddle Hut; 3.5–4.5 hours additional for Little Meru
Habitat: Heather & Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Saddle Hut

Day 3Day 3 - Saddle Hut - SOCIALIST PEAK - Momella Gate

Today is summit day—the most challenging and rewarding stage of your Mount Meru adventure.

The day begins in the early hours of the morning, with an ascent starting around 1:30 AM. After a light breakfast, we leave Saddle Hut under the stars and begin the steep climb towards Rhino Point at approximately 3,820 metres.

From Rhino Point, the trail continues along a dramatic and undulating ridge of volcanic ash and rock towards Cobra Point, situated at around 4,350 metres. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, and the climb demands determination, steady pacing, and careful footing.

Depending on the pace of the group and the conditions, we may pause at Cobra Point to witness the first spectacular colours of sunrise or continue towards the ultimate goal—Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru.

The final section is challenging, with parts of the trail following the crater rim across volcanic ash and rocky terrain. The steep and exposed sections require concentration and careful movement, making this one of the most adventurous parts of the entire climb.

Reaching Socialist Peak

After the demanding final ascent, you will finally reach Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres.

Standing at the summit as the sun rises over the horizon is a truly unforgettable experience. On a clear morning, you can enjoy spectacular views towards Mount Kilimanjaro, while directly below lies the impressive Mount Meru crater, with its steep inner walls and distinctive Ash Cone rising from the centre.

Take a moment to celebrate your achievement, capture photographs, and enjoy the extraordinary landscape.

You made it!

Descent to Momella Gate

After celebrating the summit, we begin our descent from the high mountain environment. The return journey is considerably faster, taking us through open grassland and mixed forest as we gradually lose elevation.

The lower sections of the trail also provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. Keep your eyes open as we descend, as the surrounding areas of Arusha National Park are home to a variety of wildlife and bird species.

Along the way, enjoy magnificent views back towards the Mount Meru crater and across the expansive plains of the national park.

We aim to reach Momella Gate by late morning, where our vehicle will be waiting to take you onward.

After completing this incredible summit adventure, take time to reflect on the journey, the views, and the achievement of reaching the summit of Mount Meru with Luguru Adventures.
